Group Math Tutoring Sessions

What are weekly group tutoring sessions? Weekly group tutoring sessions meet once a week for an hour for the length of the semester. Sessions consist of a small group of no more than 6-8 students and are led by a credentialed faculty member. Students attending a weekly tutoring session benefit not only from a knowledgeable and experienced tutor but also from the opportunity for discussion and collaboration with their peers.

How do I sign up? Students can sign up for weekly group tutoring by printing and completing the online Tutor Request Form. Based on availability, students will be placed on a first come first serve basis as session size is limited (6 to 8 students only).

Student Commitment to Weekly Group Tutoring. By requesting weekly group tutoring, you are making a commitment to attend your group on a weekly basis and to communicate with your tutor regularly. Failure to do so will result in your removal from the group so that we can place another student into the group. If at any point you no longer wish to participate in group tutoring, please let the tutoring coordinator know via email.

Tips for Students: How to get the most out of your tutoring session

  • Be motivated! This means that you should be attending class regularly, keeping up with the reading and homework, and doing work for the class outside of your tutoring session.
  • Tutoring is a semester-long commitment, so use it consistently. Studies show that regular weekly group tutoring is effective and leads to better grades and we ask that you to attend your tutoring session during your specified time. Prepare for your tutoring session. Go to class, review your notes, do the homework, jot down a question or two about the material; the more you have done before your tutoring session, the more productive it will be.
  • Communicate with your tutor. Share your expectations and work with your tutor to set some ground rules for your sessions. Be open to working with others at the session and take advantage of the opportunity to learn from your peers. Give feedback and make suggestions when appropriate.
  • Be patient and flexible. Try to be tolerant of others' needs and recognize that other students have their own concerns and questions. If you already know the answer to a question, volunteer to explain it to others!
  • Be an active learner. Do not just sit and listen during your tutoring sessions! Ask questions, do sample problems, go up to the board, draw diagrams and explain course concepts in your own words.
