Since 1949

Village Christian School was founded in 1949 as an outreach to the community providing an innovative Christ-centered education that equips students to be leaders and influencers. From our humble beginnings in a small church building in Burbank with only 40 Elementary students, VCS has grown into one of the largest JK-12th grade private schools in Southern California, where students enjoy a serene 30-acre campus with the support of a vibrant community of families.

Village Christian School is a truly unique place; a dynamic community of scholars, athletes, and artists all thriving as they develop their God-given abilities. These amazing students are nurtured by caring professionals, who excel at inspiring students. Our faculty employs cutting-edge curriculum within innovative research-based programs, utilizing newly renovated facilities that host all the activities a student could wish for in a safe, family-oriented atmosphere.

God has been doing great things at VCS during our journey to become one of the largest and most prominent private Christian schools in the country. It’s here at Village Christian that your student will develop the skills essential to their current and future success. They will also foster the mindset and cultivate the skills necessary to distinguish themselves in an ever-shifting culture, preparing them to leave here ready to overcome tomorrow’s challenges.

As we work to ensure every student thrives at VCS and beyond, we do so within the context of our core CARE values — Christ-centered, Affordable and Accessible, Real Relationships, and Educational Excellence.

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to visit our beautiful 30-acre campus and see how these values are realized in the lives of our students, faculty, and staff.

Central to the mission of Village Christian School is our invitation to the entire student body to consider, trust, and follow the Lord Jesus Christ.

We seek to provide a distinctly Christian education, beginning in the early grades.

Biblical Studies begin in junior kindergarten with the timeless stories of Old Testament people of faith as well as the Christmas and Easter narratives, all of which point to the Savior, King Jesus. Bible verse memorization is also key, as a demonstration of positive character traits. As students mature, the Gospel message is presented and they begin to learn about the life, death, and resurrection of Christ along with the attributes of God, with an emphasis on integrating God’s Word into life habits and choices. Students also learn stewardship by supporting ministries that serve those in need.

In Middle School, students are taught foundational Biblical truth and Christian theology, diving deeper into what it means to receive and trust in Jesus Christ. Biblical Studies curriculum helps students look through the lens of the Biblical worldview in order to foster a holistic development of their identity in Christ.

In High School, spiritual formation is encouraged through specific programs that allow students to explore and deepen faith in Jesus Christ. Students are also given the opportunity to apply that faith through interactive community involvement such as service opportunities and missions trips.

History

Founded in 1949, Village Christian School has been a vanguard of quality, Christian education in the Greater Los Angeles area for the past seven decades. From its humble beginnings in a small church building with only 40 elementary students, VCS has grown into the one of the largest K-12 private schools in the nation with 1,100 students on a 110-acre campus, 30 of which are developed.

VCS started in the heart of Pastor Phil Gibson, whose dream was for children of his community to receive an exceptional Christian education. His original vision was to serve as an outreach to the community by providing quality private education at an affordable price. As the intentional result of this vision, Village admits students and families with varying faiths and backgrounds. We welcome this diversity as it helps our students gain a greater understanding of all people and prepares them to share their faith in the world beyond our campus.

The school started in the buildings of Village Church in Burbank and quickly expanded and filled the church campus. Within a few years, it became clear that new facilities were needed to house the growing student body. In 1957, the Board of Directors authorized the purchase of the current property on Penrose and Village Avenue. Over the next decades, Phil Gibson’s dream blossomed fully: families and students gave of their time and effort to pour concrete, construct buildings, attend Loyalty Dinners, hold bake sales, and form a Parent Teacher Fellowship. The chapel, with its identifying steeple, was built. The elementary buildings went up, A, B, and C wings of high school were built. A cafeteria, auditorium, and new gymnasium were constructed.

Since that initial ground-breaking, Village Christian has continued to grow. The past decade has seen the school adjust to the changing socioeconomic climate of Los Angeles and has become one of the most diverse and innovative Christian schools in the country. Pastor Gibson's initial vision still guides the school as it continues to add buildings and programs to support the mission to provide a Christ-centered education producing students who thrive.

Mission Statement

The mission of Village Christian School is to provide a CAREing, Christ-centered education, producing students who thrive.

In order to reach our mission, Village Christian School focuses on the following CARE values:

  • Christ-Centered: Village Christian School sees its primary purpose to be a welcoming school where students can be exposed to the rich life of God’s love by knowing Christ personally (John 17:3). It is our desire that every student comes to a point where Christ is at the center of their life, influencing every thought that they have and action that they make. In so doing, they will be equipped to spread His Word even further.
  • Accessibility/Affordability: Allowing Christ to influence every thought and action, we model our school after Jesus’ example of making Himself available to all that would come to Him. He did not set Himself aside for the most privileged or most affluent, but rather was welcoming to all that wanted to hear Him. Following His lead, our goal is to be accessible to the greatest number of students and families possible.
  • Real Relationships: Motivated by love, God sacrificed His own Son so that we could have a real eternal relationship with Him (John 3:16). Likewise, the evidence that we have a vital relationship with Christ shows up in the way we love one another. (John 13:35). Having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is central to every other relationship we have and as we pursue this relationship with Him, He will increase our desire to serve one another.
  • Educational Excellence: Finally, as a school, these values are expressed in an excellent Christian education. We don’t believe that excellence is compromised with accessibility and therefore, we dedicate ourselves in the pursuit of academic excellence unmatched by both public and other private schools. It is our desire that each student develop a lifelong love of learning and improving themselves for the future.

Statement of Faith

We believe

…the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God.

…that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

…in the deity of Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory.

…that for the salvation of lost and sinful man, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential.

…in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life and by whose infilling the believer is equipped for service.

…in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost: they that are saved unto the resurrection of life, and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.

…in the spiritual unity of believers in Christ.
