Reminder

Homework is subject to change! It will be assigned on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights (maybe a few Wednesday nights). It is primarily practice and responsibility. Some homework will be graded, while others may not. It is your responsibility as a student to come to class with your homework completed. You will write their nightly homework in your homework notebook at the end of each day.

Homework is different than studying. Homework should rarely need your parents' assistance, however studying most definitely requires their involvement. Please ask your parents (or older brother or sister) to study for quizzes and tests on a nightly basis. Studying involves reviewing spelling words, vocabulary in all subjects, essential understanding questions (EU's), and review outlines (notes).

You should spend anywhere between 60-90 minutes a night during homework and studying.

Study Skills

These are just a few study skill helpful hints that I came across. I hope they help!

1. Identify a particular place to study which is free of clutter and is quiet. (e.g. desk, table, no radio or TV, separate from siblings, isolated from discussions or telephone calls, etc.)

2. Choose a time for studying which allows for maximum concentration. This will be an individual preference, however the morning is not the best because it is limited in time. :) (e.g. right after school, after one hour of play and relaxation, after dinner, etc.)

3. Have your child study at the same identified time each day. In the event he/she does not have an assignment, the time should be used for reading or reviewing.

4. Provide your child with materials needed in order to be organized at his/her work area. This will reduce the need for your child to interrupt his/her work to look for materials. (e.g. paper, pencils, pen, ruler, eraser, pencil sharpener, colored pencils, stapler, dictionary, thesaurus, etc.)

5. As a parent, be available to help or check for completion and/or accuracy. Being available does not mean sitting with your child. It is best to be in another room while available.

6. Have your child plan for short study breaks. (e.g. drink of water, stretching break, restroom break, etc. after every other assignment or every 15 or 20 minutes)

7. Require your child to review nightly for two to three nights before a test.

8. Interact frequently with your child in order to help him/her follow written directions

9. Require that assignments done incorrectly, for any reason, be redone.

10. Have your chilid keep his/her notes organized in a folder for each subject or activity.
