Welcome to Societal Issues. Last semester of your High School career! Congratulations. Hope we have a great time together exploring some of the major issues facing our cuture today. We will look at some of the issues that have been around for a while, such as abortion as well as more modern problems, such as Textneck and other problems arising from Technology. Is Global Warming a real threat? What about Christians and war?
Week of May 14
All week we will be working on the topic of your choice. You need to write a 500 word essay and prepare for a 15 min presentation per group.
Week of May 7
All week we will be focussing on Love, Commitment, Abuse and Divorce.
Guidelines for community service:
Jesus came to serve (Mark 10:45), so as His followers we want to do the same. We hope and pray that through serving you will develop a servants heart and that you will also learn to see how the Lord has gifted you.
- You need to serve 15 hours during the semester.
- You may not get paid for the service.
- Choose from the following ideas:
- Feeding the homeless with your church or other group
- Going on a mission trip for a weekend during the semester. Mexically is good.
- Working at your church in the nursery, children’s ministry, choir, sound, band, etc.
- Working as an assistant coach for a little league or similar program.
- Serving in a retirement home or hospital.
- Serving in a ministry such as a homeless shelter or other program for the poor and needy.
- Helping organize worship event at Village.
- Other – must discuss them with me first.
- You need to give an oral report of the service you did by the end of the semester and show written evidence that you have done it. Include in the evidence:
- The name of an adult overseeing your work, including a signature from that adult.
- The address and phone number of the place you worked at.
- A 250 word summary of what you experienced, what parts you liked and disliked.
Guidelines for Reading:
You need to do one book report during the semester.
- You should read a book about a societal issue of your choice. The book must discuss the issue from a variety of perspectives and must include the biblical perspective.
- It must be at least 200 pages in length. You may also choose to read several shorter books as long as the pages add up to 200.
- You must write a 300 word book report on the material you read. Write about what you learned, what made you think, what helped change your life, what questions you have about the material in the book, etc.
- It will also be due by the end of the semester.
