Extra credit options may be periodically posted on this page throughout the year. Be sure to check it since I may not always announce it in class.

ALL CLASSES: Visit the Norton Simon Museum on the first Friday of any month between 6pm-9pm. Admission is FREE the first Friday of every month (just check the website to make sure that Friday is not a holiday). For directions, you can visit the museum website at www.nortonsimon.org. During your visit, write a half page response to three different pieces of art. Each piece of art must be a different medium or from a different century than the other works you are discussing (for example, write about a painting from the 1800's, a sculpture, and a photograph). Please type up your responses, using MLA format (should be roughly a page when double spaced). Responses should include the title of the art work, the artist, and the date(s) it was created. You should talk about what it looks like, how it makes you feel, what techniques the artist uses to capture your attention, and why you think this piece of art is important and/or valuable to society. Keep in mind that this is a response, not merely a factual description of the work. You must also turn in a flyer and/or ticket from the museum to prove that you visited. Credit will not be given for partial responses. Extra credit assignments are due on the Monday following your Friday trip (regardless of whether your class meets with me that day). So grab a latte, a warm scarf, a notebook, and a friend and head to the museum to see some incredible art!!!

C,D,F,G: Groups of students may act out a dramatic scene from "The Great Gatsby." Groups must organize themselves and schedule a time with me to perform their scene in front of the class. Groups can either enact a scene directly from the play or can re-write a scene and set it in a different time period. Groups must dress up (in some way) and use at least two props. Extra points will be given to groups that memorizes their lines.

C,D,F,G: Students may either create an original visual or musical artwork that represents the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy. The piece must be presented to the class and then turned in to the teacher, along with a one page essay describing how it relates to and expresses the relationship between the central figures of "The Great Gatsby."
