Practical Parenting +

Practical Parenting + is the title we give our parenting program. It includes a parenting section of books and videos in the high school library available for check out; videos that are sent home on weekends during the school year; monthly fliers with articles of value for all parents; and parenting classes. All of our classes are interactive, fun, informative and practical. The goal of our program is to strengthen families and help us build healthy, responsible children rather than having to repair adults.
Becoming a Love and Logic Parent is our basic parenting course; it's fun and so helpful to ALL parents. It is a requirement for kindergarten parents, but we hope ALL parents will participate - ALL parents who are willing to experiment with some techniques that can make parenting more fun, easier and more effective than ever before.
In Deuteronomy 30, verse 15, God says, "See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction." And in verse 19 He continues, "Now, choose . . ." What will it be-life or death? God suggests that life is the better choice, but He leaves it up to us. We are allowed to choose.
The power of choice was given to Adam and Eve; it was part of the uniqueness that made them human and different from the rest of creation. Individually, we are where we are in life today because of the choices we have made. Sometimes we would rather not have so many choices, and yet, at the same time, we realize that the struggle of decision-making is a part of the growth process. We mature as we learn to make healthy choices, and we learn to make healthy choices often through the mistakes we make - the poor decisions we make!
So, what does this say to us as parents? Are we allowing our children to learn to make healthy choices by allowing them to make mistakes, to make decisions and then experience the consequences of those decision? How much are we trusting God and trusting our children to learn from their choices without our preaching, nagging, threatening, lecturing and reminding?
Becoming a Love and Logic Parent means becoming less of a drill sergeant, less of a rescuer, and more of a consultant, guide and mentor for our kids. It allows us to build a close, loving relationship with our children while we let consequences do the teaching. It's not easy to change patterns. If we've been a rescuer, it's not easy to stop rescuing. But, with time and practice and some help from other parents in parenting classes, it is possible; and we will find ourselves enjoying our children more and feeling less overwhelmed by the task of parenting.
Becoming a Love and Logic Parent is offered on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. - noon throughout the school year and requires three Saturdays to complete. We offer the same course at least once during the year on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:00 p.m. In addition to the Love and Logic course, specific parenting topics are offered on Wednesday nights throughout the year that enhance and expand on the basic course. These offer you more support, encouragement, skill-building and practice.
Fliers are available in August with the Saturday and Wednesday parenting schedules. Make this a priority for you and your family next year. You will not regret the time and effort you put into this. You will reap enormous benefits for you and for your children.
