MS/HS Minutes

March 3, 2008

President Debbie Sponsler welcomed everyone to the meeting and opened the meeting in prayer.  It was noted that Treasurer June Sweeney would be in attendance, although she would arrive late.

Secretary’s Report

The February minutes were distributed for review.  Allison Weir made a motion to accept the minutes as presented.  Jackie Steely seconded the motion.  A vote was taken, and the minutes were approved as presented.

Treasurer’s Report

The February financials, including Budget to Actual and Receipts/Disbursements, were distributed for review by Treasurer June Sweeney.  Kristi Herrera made a motion to accept the reports as presented; Maria Barbario seconded the motion.  A vote was taken, and the treasurer’s report was approved as presented.

Guest Speakers- It was noted that high school principal Mr. Luketic was expected to attend the meeting; however, since president Debbie Sponsler had his notes, she began going over some of the important points.

  • Congratulations were extended to various sports teams for their outstanding achievements; the Fine Arts Showcase which was held on March 1st was noted to be a resounding success.  The recently held high school parent meeting which addressed honors and advanced placement courses for their students also proved to be very valuable.  Upon arrival to the meeting, Mr. Luketic thanked Debbie for going over his notes and also thanked board members for their continued commitment to our school.

Old Business

  • Valentine’s Appreciation Luncheon For MS/HS Teachers (February 7th) & Valentine’s Balloon Fundraiser (February 14th) -Debbie Sponsler expressed her thanks to all the volunteers who gave of their time to make these events such huge successes.  A discussion came up regarding what type of thank you gift we should send the “Leeper Brothers”, the company that donated the helium tanks for our fundraiser.  Debbie Sponsler made a motion that we send the company an edible arrangement; June Sweeney seconded the motion.  A vote was taken and it was agreed we will send them an edible fruit arrangement.  Teresa  Marco volunteered to take care of ordering the gift.

New Business

  • Priority Request-Maljian Family-Discussion was held regarding a gift basket that will be given to the daughters of Steve Maljian, in his remembrance.  Although, a theme was selected for the basket, the exact details of the gift were not yet decided upon.  Suzy Frankian made a motion that our board contribute $300 to this gift; Allison Weir seconded the motion.  A vote was taken and the motion was approved.
  • Priority Request Chris Frankland- After the catastrophic fire at Mr. Frankland’s home, ideas were discussed about how the board might assist his family.  Nothing was finalized, however, and the topic will be brought up again in the near future.
  • Argentina Mission Trip- Judie Hanna in the Student Bookstore is continuing to collect suitcases, as well as new socks and underwear for children that can be given to the children in Argentina.  Also, anyone interested in donating AA and/or AAA batteries for the troops in Iraq can drop them off with Mrs. Hanna.  Thank you.
  • MS/HS Board Nominations are now being accepted for the 2008-2009 school year.
  • The Scholarship Committee for the high school seniors will need a few volunteers to assist with the review of the scholarship applications.  Those interested should talk to Debbie.
  • Teacher Appreciation Luncheon is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13th.  This event will be chaired by Maria and Kristi with food being purchased through StoneFire restaurant.
  • Our Year-end Giveaway for Students will be Italian ices again this year, due to the treat’s popularity with all our students.  The event is set for Monday, May 19th ; Evelyn Righettini, Leticia Schwager and Teresa Marco will chair this event.
  • MS Awards Chapel is scheduled for May 23rd at 8:00 a.m.; Jackie Steely and June Sweeney volunteered to assist with this function.
  • High School Awards Ceremony is scheduled for May 28th from 7:00-9:00 p.m.; Allison Weir and Teresa Marco volunteered to assist with this function.
  • Year-end Teachers’ Gifts are being selected and purchased by Maria Barberio; anyone interested in helping her assemble the gifts can contact her directly.

Coming Up Soon

Debbie pointed out important dates on our school calendar and encouraged everyone to take note of these.  Of particular interest is our Community Open House which is scheduled for Saturday, March 15th and is a great opportunity for us to introduce new Village Christian Schools students and families to our administration, teachers, academic programs and campus activities. 

Continuing Events

  • Campus Prayer Walk-Debbie reminded everyone that the Campus Prayer Walk is led by Susan Kendall-Bell every Friday morning from 8:40 a.m.-9:30 a.m.
