MS/HS Minutes

October 1, 2007

PTF’s second meeting of the school year was opened with a prayer, followed by a greeting from president Debbie Sponsler to all present and an introduction of our guest speakers.

Guest Speakers

  • Mr. Brache of VCS’s Spanish Department was the first guest speaker.  He gave a general overview of his own background and experience, and then talked about the various aspects of the Spanish curriculum at VCS, encouraging anyone with questions to contact him.
  • Mrs. Chris Luketic, VCS’s senior project coordinator, gave an in-depth explanation about the forthcoming senior projects.  Among the topics she discussed were background information and purpose of the senior projects, as well as possible topics that seniors might pursue.
  • High School Principal Mr. Luketic noted that he, along with other VCS students and parents, had just returned from a Memorial Service for Richard Dalton Welsh, father of VCS student Derick.  Mr. Luketic encouraged everyone to offer their continued support to Derick.  Another topic discussed by Mr. Luketic was a future plan to possibly host a PTF social/tea to welcome new VCS parents.  Such an event would be hosted in August or September, 2008, at the beginning of the next school year.  With regards to the monthly PTF meetings, Mr. Luketic explained that he plans to invite one teacher to be a guest speaker at each meeting over the upcoming months, so that all of us can get acquainted with the VCS faculty.  He plans to start with the newest faculty members.  Mr. Luketic also thanked everyone for making Back to School Night a great success, and mentioned that the rate of attendance by parents was highly commendable.

Secretary’s Report

Copies of the minutes of the Sept. 10, 2007 meeting were not available.  Thus, at November’s meeting, the minutes of September’s and October’s meetings will be presented for approval.

Treasurer’s Report

Treasurer June Sweeney presented two documents: Receipts Disbursements for September 2007 and the Monthly Report-Budget to Actual- July-September 2007.

A motion to approve these documents was made by Vice President Kristi Herrera and seconded by Lisa Cripps.  A special request was discussed about the possibility of obtaining a second refrigerator for the high school faculty lounge.  It was agreed that this appliance is greatly needed.  Since there was the immediate opportunity to purchase a nearly new refrigerator for $350.00, Lisa Cripps made a motion that PTF purchase this refrigerator for our faculty; Allison Weir seconded the motion.  It was voted that the refrigerator will be purchased by PTF.  However, Vice President Maria Barbario suggested that we check with the high school office to see if the school’s “maintenance fund” might be able to cover the cost (or part of the cost) of this refrigerator, making note that our “special request” fund is already depleted.  Thus, the money for this purchase will have to come out of our overall/general cash fund.

Old Business

  • “Welcome Back Bagel Brunch”- Allison Weir reported that the bagel brunch was very successful and expressed her thanks to everyone who volunteered and/or brought refreshments for this teacher-appreciation event.
  • Magazine Sale-President Debbie Sponsler expressed her thanks to all the volunteers who helped Mr. Wilson with the Magazine Sale drive to date.

Continuing Business

·        Family Fair- Since the fair is fast-approaching, Debbie noted that we still need volunteers for our Cake Walk Booth.  Judy Dvoracek and Monique Morris volunteered to chair this booth.  Volunteer sign-up sheets were passed around for people interested in helping the day of the fair, as well as people who are willing to donate baked goods for the booth.  Vice presidents Maria Barbario and Kristi Herrera will chair the Blanket Booth.

·        Campus Prayer Walk-Debbie highlighted the importance of our Prayer Walk which is held every Friday morning, and gave a personal testimony to the wondrous results of prayer.

·        Magazine Sale-Debbie called for volunteers who can help on the up-coming turn-in-dates to compile student orders.

·        Skate Night-Allison Weir is the chair for this event.  Since there is no official co-chair, she asked for volunteers to help her sell tickets before this October 8th event.  Tickets will go on sale October 4th @ $10.00 each.

·        Other Important Dates: Debbie announced important events on our school calendar and encouraged everyone to enjoy all the exciting school activities that are coming up, including: Shakespeare on the Shield, Community Open House, Spirit Week, Nonfire and Homecoming (The Wizard of Oz theme this year).

·        Thanksgiving Treats for Teachers-This event is slated for November 14th.  Kristi and Maria will chair this event.  They also did the research regarding refreshments, and reported that they can get Iced Chai Tea and Mocha Iced Coffee from The Coffee Stop for a reasonable price that will fit into our budget.  Other treats for this event will be purchased and/or baked and donated by members of PTF.

·        Fall Giveaway for HS/MS Students-This event is slated for November 16th.  Kristi and Maria contacted Krispi Kreme donuts in Burbank and negotiated a price of $3.50/dozen.  It was agreed by PTF that we will purchase 120 dozen donuts for this year’s event.  Kristi and Maria will pick-up the donuts and bring them to VCS.  Discussion came up about how to keep track of students after they’ve been served.  It was agreed that we will probably just put a small mark on students’ hands with a Sharpie, so that we don’t give students more than one donut each, and then run out of donuts for the rest of the student population.

  • Cram Candy-This giveaway for students is slated for Thursday, January 17th.  Although we have not finalized what we will be giving the students, we are looking into the possibility of giving away Wonka brand candy if we can get a good price on the products.

Our next PTF meeting will be held on November 5th at 1:15 p.m.
