  • Village Christian’s third annual Spark Symposium was held last night, March 27, 2018, showcasing the amazing work of our students in their chosen Concentration, and it just have been the most impressive event yet.

    “It was inspiring for me to see the high quality of work, the articulate and passionate presentations, and the interest and excitement of students as they pursued their sparks,” said Concentrations® Provost Ray Endacott. “It was great to see students taking ownership.”

    The night included:

    • An original musical that was written, directed, and performed by our students;
    • Our annual “Big Pitch” Business Start-up Competition;
    • A film festival;
    • A robotic car race;
    • An exposé on the dangers of and solutions for plastics;
    • An art show;
    • A political debate;
    • A case for improving the foster care system;
    • Interactive exhibits on the impact of extreme weather, fire dangers, and military entrance requirements;
    • Live painting and musical performances; and
    • Student book signings.

    The campus was rich with talent, creativity, independent work, critical thinking, pursuit of a passion, and command of evidence. Students were cheering each other on in their academic and career interests, the faculty was glowing with pride at the accomplishments, and parents were in awe at the growth in their children.

    Among the many benefits of the event is the fact that our students accomplished all of this without the motivation of receiving a grade, and in addition to their normal schedule of academics, sports, and the arts.

    The night was filled with co-curricular, independent, student-inspired effort for the sake of learning and for the pure reward of growing as young men and women.

    “These behaviors serve as hard, empirical evidence of students thriving,” said Head of School Tom Konjoyan. “The next time you consider the value of a VCS education, consider nights like this – unique, VCS-only events like Spark Symposium.”
